Eve of the Nativity (Christmas Eve)

Collect (LSB)

O God, You make this most holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that as we have known the mysteries of that Light on earth, we may also come to the fullness of His joys in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament (LSB): Isaiah 9:2-7

    2(A)The people who walk in darkness
         Will see a great light;
         Those who live in a dark land,
         The light will shine on them.
    3(B)You shall multiply the nation,
         You (C)shall increase their gladness;
         They will be glad in Your presence
         As with the gladness of harvest,
         As (D)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
    4For (E)You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
         The rod of their (F)oppressor, as at the battle of (G)Midian.
    5For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
         And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
    6For a (H)child will be born to us, a (I)son will be given to us;
         And the (J)government will rest (K)on His shoulders;
         And His name will be called (L)Wonderful Counselor, (M)Mighty God,
         Eternal (N)Father, Prince of (O)Peace.
    7There will be (P)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
         On the (Q)throne of David and over his kingdom,
         To establish it and to uphold it with (R)justice and righteousness
         From then on and forevermore
         (S)The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

The Child Immanuel

 10Then the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying,

 11"Ask a (A)sign for yourself from the LORD your God; make it deep as Sheol or high as heaven."

 12But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!"

 13Then he said, "Listen now, O (B)house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will (C)try the patience of (D)my God as well?

 14"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, (E)a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name [a](F)Immanuel.

Gospel: Luke 2:1-14

Jesus' Birth in Bethlehem

 1Now in those days a decree went out from (A)Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of (B)all [a]the inhabited earth.

 2This was the first census taken while [b]Quirinius was governor of (C)Syria.

 3And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city.

 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because (D)he was of the house and family of David,

 5in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child.

 6While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth.

 7And she (E)gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

 8In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.

 9And (F)an angel of the Lord suddenly (G)stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.

 10But the angel said to them, "(H)Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people;

 11for today in the city of David there has been born for you a (I)Savior, who is [c](J)Christ (K)the Lord.

 12"(L)This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

 13And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
    14"(M)Glory to God in the highest,
         And on earth peace among men [d](N)with whom He is pleased."

God Forgives and Redeems

    21"(A)Remember these things, O Jacob,
         And Israel, for you are (B)My servant;
         I have formed you, you are My servant,
         O Israel, you will (C)not be forgotten by Me.
    22"I have (D)wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloud
         And your sins like a heavy mist
         (E)Return to Me, for I have (F)redeemed you."
    23(G)Shout for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done it!
         Shout joyfully, you lower parts of the earth;
         (H)Break forth into a shout of joy, you mountains,
         O forest, and every tree in it;
         For (I)the LORD has redeemed Jacob
         And in Israel He (J)shows forth His glory.

 24Thus says the LORD, your (K)Redeemer, and the one who (L)formed you from the womb,
         "I, the LORD, am the maker of all things,
         (M)Stretching out the heavens by Myself
         And spreading out the earth all alone,
    25(N)Causing the omens of boasters to fail,
         Making fools out of diviners,
         (O)Causing wise men to draw back
         And turning their knowledge into foolishness,
    26(P)Confirming the word of His servant
         And performing the purpose of His messengers
         It is I who says of Jerusalem, 'She shall be inhabited!'
         And of the (Q)cities of Judah, '(R)They shall be built.'
         And I will raise up her ruins again.
    27"It is I who says to the depth of the sea, 'Be dried up!'
         And I will make your rivers (S)dry.
    28"It is I who says of (T)Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd!
         And he will perform all My desire '
         And he declares of Jerusalem, '(U)She will be built,'
         And of the temple, 'Your foundation will be laid.'"

God Uses Cyrus

    1Thus says the LORD to (V)Cyrus His anointed,
         Whom I have taken by the right (W)hand,
         To (X)subdue nations before him
         And to (Y)loose the loins of kings;
         To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:
    2"I will go before you and (Z)make the rough places smooth;
         I will (AA)shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron (AB)bars.
    3"I will give you the (AC)treasures of darkness
         And hidden wealth of secret places,
         So that you may know that it is I,
         The LORD, the God of Israel, who (AD)calls you by your name.
    4"For the sake of (AE)Jacob My servant,
         And Israel My chosen one,
         I have also (AF)called you by your name;
         I have given you a title of honor
         Though you have (AG)not known Me.
    5"I am the LORD, and (AH)there is no other;
         (AI)Besides Me there is no God
         I will (AJ)gird you, though you have not known Me;
    6That (AK)men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun
         That there is (AL)no one besides Me.
         I am the LORD, and there is no other,
    7The One (AM)forming light and (AN)creating darkness,
         Causing well-being and (AO)creating calamity;
         I am the LORD who does all these.

God's Supreme Power

    8"(AP)Drip down, O heavens, from above,
         And let the clouds pour down righteousness;
         Let the (AQ)earth open up and salvation bear fruit,
         (AR)And righteousness spring up with it.
         I, the LORD, have created it.
    9"Woe to the one who (AS)quarrels with his Maker--
         An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth!
         Will the (AT)clay say to the potter, 'What are you doing?'
         Or the thing you are making say, 'He has no hands'?
    10"Woe to him who says to a father, 'What are you begetting?'
         Or to a woman, 'To what are you giving birth?'"

 11Thus says the (AU)LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his (AV)Maker:
         "(AW)Ask Me about the things to come concerning My (AX)sons,
         And you shall commit to Me (AY)the work of My hands.
    12"It is I who (AZ)made the earth, and created man upon it
         I (BA)stretched out the heavens with My hands
         And I ordained (BB)all their host.
    13"I have aroused him in (BC)righteousness
         And I will (BD)make all his ways smooth;
         He will (BE)build My city and will let My exiles go (BF)free,
         Without any payment or reward," says the LORD of hosts.

The Woman, Israel
 1A great (A)sign appeared (B)in heaven: (C)a woman (D)clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;

 2and she was with child; and she (E)cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan
 3Then (F)another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red (G)dragon having (H)seven heads and (I)ten horns, and on his heads were (J)seven diadems.

 4And his tail swept away a (K)third of the stars of heaven and (L)threw them to the earth And the (M)dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth (N)he might devour her child.

The Male Child, Christ
 5And (O)she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to (P)rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was (Q)caught up to God and to His throne.

 6Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for (R)one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

The Angel, Michael
 7And there was war in heaven, (S)Michael and his angels waging war with the (T)dragon The dragon and (U)his angels waged war,

 8and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven.

 9And the great (V)dragon was thrown down, the (W)serpent of old who is called the devil and (X)Satan, who (Y)deceives the whole world; he was (Z)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

 10Then I heard (AA)a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the (AB)salvation, and the power, and the (AC)kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the (AD)accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.

 11"And they (AE)overcame him because of (AF)the blood of the Lamb and because of (AG)the word of their testimony, and they (AH)did not love their life even when faced with death.

 12"For this reason, (AI)rejoice, O heavens and (AJ)you who dwell in them (AK)Woe to the earth and the sea, because (AL)the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only (AM)a short time."

 13And when the (AN)dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted (AO)the woman who gave birth to the male child.

 14But the (AP)two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly (AQ)into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for (AR)a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.

 15And the (AS)serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood.
