Rorate coeli (Advent 4)

Explanation of the Week

The coming of God in all His unveiled power at Mt. Sinai was terrifying to the people of Israel. The thundering voice of the Lord puts sinners in fear of death (Deut 18:15-19). God, therefore, raised up a prophet like Moses, the Messiah, the Christ. God came to His people veiled in human flesh. The skies poured down the Righteous One from heaven; the earth opened her womb and brought forth Salvation (Introit) through the blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of the Lord (Lk 1:39-56). The fruit of her womb is the very Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the One whose sandal strap John was not worthy to loose (Jn 1:19-28). In Jesus we are delivered from fear and anxiety. In Him alone we have the peace of God which surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:4-7).

Introit

Antiphon:
Rain down, you heavens, | from above,*
     and let the skies pour down the | Righteous One;
Let the earth o- | pen her womb,*
     and bring forth Sal- | vation. (Isaiah 45:8)

Psalm:
The heavens declare the glo- | ry of God;*
     and the firmament shows His | handiwork.
Their voice is gone out into | all the earth,*
     and their words to the end | of the world.
In the heavens He has set a tabernacle | for the sun,*
     which is like a Bridegroom coming out of His | chamber.
His going forth is from the end of the | heaven,*
     and his circuit unto the | end of it. (Psalm 19:1, 4-6)

Collect (LSB)

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come and help us by Your might, that the sins which weigh us down may be quickly lifted by Your grace and mercy; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Collect (TLH)

Stir up, O Lord, we beseech Thee, Thy power, and come and help us with Thy great might, that by Thy grace whatsoever is hindered by our sins may be speedily accomplished through Thy mercy and satisfaction; who livest and reignest with Thee and the Holy Ghoest, ever one God world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

Old Testament (LSB): Deut. 18:15-19

 15"(A)The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.

 16"This is (B)according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.'

 17"(C)The LORD said to me, 'They have spoken well.

 18'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and (D)I will put My words in his mouth, and (E)he shall speak to them all that I command him.

 19'(F)It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.

The Greatness of God

    1"(A)Comfort, O comfort My people," says your God.
    2"(B)Speak kindly to Jerusalem;
         And call out to her, that her (C)warfare has ended,
         That her (D)iniquity has been removed,
         That she has received of the LORD'S hand
         (E)Double for all her sins."
    3(F)A voice is calling,
         "(G)Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness;
         Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.
    4"Let every valley be lifted up,
         And every mountain and hill be made low;
         And let the rough ground become a plain,
         And the rugged terrain a broad valley;
    5Then the (H)glory of the LORD will be revealed,
         And (I)all flesh will see it together;
         For the (J)mouth of the LORD has spoken."
    6A voice says, "Call out."
         Then he answered, "What shall I call out?"
         (K)All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
    7The (L)grass withers, the flower fades,
         When the (M)breath of the LORD blows upon it;
         Surely the people are grass.
    8The grass withers, the flower fades,
         But (N)the word of our God stands forever.

 5Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. (B)The Lord is near.

Gospel: John 1:19-28

The Testimony of John

 19This is (A)the testimony of John, when (B)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites (C)from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

 20And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "(D)I am not the Christ."

 21They asked him, "What then? Are you (E)Elijah?" And he said, "I am not " "Are you (F)the Prophet?" And he answered, "No."

 22Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"

 23He said, "I am (G)A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said."

 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

 25They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor (H)the Prophet?"

 26John answered them saying, "(I)I baptize [a]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

 27"It is (J)He who comes after me, the (K)thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."

 28These things took place in Bethany (L)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Offertory

Hail Mary, full of grace: the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. (Luke 1)

Matins Psalm(s): Ps. 5

Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.

For the choir director; for flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.

    1(A)Give ear to my words, O LORD,
         Consider my [a](B)groaning.
    2Heed (C)the sound of my cry for help, (D)my King and my God,
         For to You I pray.
    3In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice;
         In the (E)morning I will order my prayer to You and eagerly (F)watch.
    4For You are not a God (G)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
         (H)No evil dwells with You.
    5The (I)boastful shall not (J)stand before Your eyes;
         You (K)hate all who do iniquity.
    6You (L)destroy those who speak falsehood;
         The LORD abhors (M)the man of bloodshed and deceit.
    7But as for me, (N)by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
         At Your holy temple I will (O)bow in (P)reverence for You.
    8O LORD, (Q)lead me (R)in Your righteousness (S)because of my foes;
         Make Your way straight before me.
    9There is (T)nothing reliable in what they say;
         Their (U)inward part is destruction itself
         Their (V)throat is an open grave;
         They flatter with their tongue.
    10Hold them guilty, O God;
         (W)By their own devices let them fall!
         In the multitude of their transgressions (X)thrust them out,
         For they are (Y)rebellious against You.
    11But let all who (Z)take refuge in You (AA)be glad,
         Let them ever sing for joy;
         And may You (AB)shelter them,
         That those who (AC)love Your name may exult in You.
    12For it is You who (AD)blesses the righteous man, O LORD,
         You (AE)surround him with favor as with a shield.

First Reading: Is. 43:25-44:20

    25"I, even I, am the one who (A)wipes out your transgressions (B)for My own sake,
         And I will (C)not remember your sins.
    26"Put Me in remembrance, (D)let us argue our case together;
         State your cause, (E)that you may be proved right.
    27"Your (F)first forefather sinned,
         And your (G)spokesmen have transgressed against Me.
    28"So I will pollute the princes of the sanctuary,
         And I will consign Jacob to the (H)ban and Israel to (I)revilement.

The Blessings of Israel
    1"But now listen, O Jacob, My (J)servant,
         And Israel, whom I have chosen:
    2Thus says the LORD who made you
         And (K)formed you from the womb, who (L)will help you,
         '(M)Do not fear, O Jacob My servant;
         And you (N)Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
    3'For (O)I will pour out water on the thirsty land
         And streams on the dry ground;
         I will (P)pour out My Spirit on your (Q)offspring
         And My blessing on your descendants;
    4And they will spring up among the grass
         Like (R)poplars by streams of water.'
    5"This one will say, 'I am the LORD'S';
         And that one will call on the name of Jacob;
         And another will (S)write on his hand, 'Belonging to the LORD,'
         And will name Israel's name with honor.

 6"Thus says the LORD, the (T)King of Israel and his (U)Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:
         'I am the (V)first and I am the last,
         And there is no God (W)besides Me.
    7'Who is like Me? (X)Let him proclaim and declare it;
         Yes, let him recount it to Me in order,
         From the time that I established the ancient nation.
         And let them declare to them the things that are coming
         And the events that are going to take place.
    8'Do not tremble and do not be afraid;
         (Y)Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it?
         And (Z)you are My witnesses
         Is there any God (AA)besides Me,
         Or is there any other (AB)Rock?
         I know of none.'"

The Folly of Idolatry
 9Those who fashion a graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be (AC)put to shame.

 10Who has fashioned a god or cast an idol to (AD)no profit?

 11Behold, all his companions will be (AE)put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them together be put to shame.

 12The (AF)man shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary.

 13(AG)Another shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of (AH)man, so that it may sit in a (AI)house.

 14Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a cypress or an oak and raises it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow.

 15Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also (AJ)makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and (AK)falls down before it.

 16Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, "Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire."

 17But the rest of it he (AL)makes into a god, his graven image He falls down before it and worships; he also (AM)prays to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god."

 18They do not (AN)know, nor do they understand, for He has (AO)smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend.

 19No one recalls, nor is there (AP)knowledge or understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals I roast meat and eat it Then I make the rest of it into an (AQ)abomination, I fall down before a block of wood!"

 20He (AR)feeds on ashes; a (AS)deceived heart has turned him aside And he cannot deliver himself, nor say, "(AT)Is there not a lie in my right hand?"

Vespers Psalm(s): Ps. 145

The LORD Extolled for His Goodness.

A Psalm of Praise, of David.

    1I will (A)extol You, (B)my God, O King,
         And I will (C)bless Your name forever and ever.
    2Every day I will bless You,
         And I will (D)praise Your name forever and ever.
    3(E)Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised,
         And His (F)greatness is unsearchable.
    4One (G)generation shall praise Your works to another,
         And shall declare Your mighty acts.
    5On the (H)glorious splendor of Your majesty
         And (I)on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.
    6Men shall speak of the power of Your (J)awesome acts,
         And I will (K)tell of Your greatness.
    7They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your (L)abundant goodness
         And will (M)shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
    8The LORD is (N)gracious and merciful;
         Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
    9The LORD is (O)good to all,
         And His (P)mercies are over all His works.
    10(Q)All Your works shall give thanks to You, O LORD,
         And Your (R)godly ones shall bless You.
    11They shall speak of the (S)glory of Your kingdom
         And talk of Your power;
    12To (T)make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts
         And the (U)glory of the majesty of Your kingdom.
    13Your kingdom is an (V)everlasting kingdom,
         And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
    14The LORD (W)sustains all who fall
         And (X)raises up all who are bowed down.
    15The eyes of all look to You,
         And You (Y)give them their food in due time.
    16You (Z)open Your hand
         And satisfy the desire of every living thing.
    17The LORD is (AA)righteous in all His ways
         And kind in all His deeds.
    18The LORD is (AB)near to all who call upon Him,
         To all who call upon Him (AC)in truth.
    19He will (AD)fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
         He will also (AE)hear their cry and will save them.
    20The LORD (AF)keeps all who love Him,
         But all the (AG)wicked He will destroy.
    21My (AH)mouth will speak the praise of the LORD,
         And (AI)all flesh will (AJ)bless His holy name forever and ever.

Second Reading: Rev. 11:1-19

The Two Witnesses
 1Then there was given me a (A)measuring rod like a staff; and (B)someone said, "Get up and measure the temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it.

 2"Leave out the (C)court which is outside the temple and do not measure it, for (D)it has been given to the nations; and they will (E)tread under foot (F)the holy city for (G)forty-two months.

 3"And I will grant authority to my two (H)witnesses, and they will prophesy for (I)twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in (J)sackcloth."

 4These are the (K)two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

 5And if anyone wants to harm them, (L)fire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, (M)he must be killed in this way.

 6These have the power to (N)shut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during (O)the days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to (P)turn them into blood, and (Q)to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.

 7When they have finished their testimony, (R)the beast that comes up out of the (S)abyss will (T)make war with them, and overcome them and kill them.

 8And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the (U)great city which [a]mystically is called (V)Sodom and (W)Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

 9Those from (X)the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead [b]bodies for three and a half days, and (Y)will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.

 10And (Z)those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will (AA)send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented (AB)those who dwell on the earth.

 11But after the three and a half days, (AC)the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them.

 12And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, "(AD)Come up here " Then they (AE)went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them.

 13And in that hour there was a great (AF)earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and (AG)gave glory to the (AH)God of heaven.

 14The second (AI)woe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet--Christ's Reign Foreseen
 15Then the (AJ)seventh angel sounded; and there were (AK)loud voices in heaven, saying, "(AL)The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (AM)His [c]Christ; and (AN)He will reign forever and ever."

 16And the twenty-four elders, who (AO)sit on their thrones before God, (AP)fell on their faces and worshiped God,

 17saying, "We give You thanks, (AQ)O Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to (AR)reign.

 18"And (AS)the nations were enraged, and (AT)Your wrath came, and (AU)the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your (AV)bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, (AW)the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."

 19And (AX)the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and (AY)the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of (AZ)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a (BA)great hailstorm.
