Katharina von Bora Luther

First Reading: Is. 40:18-41:10

    18(A)To whom then will you liken God?
         Or what likeness will you compare with Him?
    19As for the (B)idol, a craftsman casts it,
         A goldsmith (C)plates it with gold,
         And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.
    20He who is too impoverished for such an offering
         Selects a (D)tree that does not rot;
         He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman
         To prepare an idol that (E)will not totter.
    21(F)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
         Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
         Have you not understood (G)from the foundations of the earth?
    22It is He who [a]sits above the [b](H)circle of the earth,
         And its inhabitants are like (I)grasshoppers,
         Who (J)stretches out the heavens like a (K)curtain
         And spreads them out like a (L)tent to dwell in.
    23He it is who reduces (M)rulers to nothing,
         Who (N)makes the judges of the earth meaningless.
    24[c]Scarcely have they been planted,
         Scarcely have they been sown,
         Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
         But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
         And the (O)storm carries them away like stubble.
    25"(P)To whom then will you liken Me
         That I would be his equal?" says the Holy One.
    26(Q)Lift up your eyes on high
         And see (R)who has created these stars,
         The (S)One who leads forth their host by number,
         He calls them all by name;
         Because of the (T)greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
         (U)Not one of them is missing.
    27(V)Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
         "My way is (W)hidden from the LORD,
         And the (X)justice due me escapes the notice of (Y)my God"?
    28(Z)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
         The (AA)Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth
         Does not become weary or tired
         His understanding is (AB)inscrutable.
    29He gives strength to the (AC)weary,
         And to him who lacks might He (AD)increases power.
    30Though (AE)youths grow weary and tired,
         And vigorous (AF)young men stumble badly,
    31Yet those who wait for the LORD
         Will (AG)gain new strength;
         They will (AH)mount up with wings like eagles,
         They will run and not get tired,
         They will walk and not become weary.

Israel Encouraged
    1"(AI)Coastlands, listen to Me (AJ)in silence,
         And let the peoples (AK)gain new strength;
         (AL)Let them come forward, then let them speak;
         (AM)Let us come together for judgment.
    2"(AN)Who has aroused one from the east
         Whom He (AO)calls in righteousness to His feet?
         He (AP)delivers up nations before him
         And subdues kings
         He makes them like (AQ)dust with his sword,
         As the wind-driven (AR)chaff with his bow.
    3"He pursues them, passing on in safety,
         By a way he had not been traversing with his feet.
    4"(AS)Who has performed and accomplished it,
         Calling forth the generations from the beginning?
         '(AT)I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last (AU)I am He.'"
    5The (AV)coastlands have seen and are afraid;
         The (AW)ends of the earth tremble;
         They have drawn near and have come.
    6Each one helps his neighbor
         And says to his brother, "Be strong!"
    7So the (AX)craftsman encourages the (AY)smelter,
         And he who smooths metal with the hammer encourages him who beats the anvil,
         Saying of the soldering, "It is good";
         And he fastens it with nails,
         (AZ)So that it will not totter.
    8"But you, Israel, (BA)My servant,
         Jacob whom I have chosen,
         Descendant of (BB)Abraham My (BC)friend,
    9You whom I have (BD)taken from the ends of the earth,
         And called from its (BE)remotest parts
         And said to you, 'You are (BF)My servant,
         I have (BG)chosen you and not rejected you.
    10'Do not (BH)fear, for I am with you;
         Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God
         I will strengthen you, surely (BI)I will help you,
         Surely I will uphold you with My righteous (BJ)right hand.'

Second Reading: Rev. 8:1-13

The Seventh Seal--the Trumpets
 1When the Lamb broke the (A)seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

 2And I saw (B)the seven angels who stand before God, and seven (C)trumpets were given to them.

 3(D)Another angel came and stood at the (E)altar, holding a (F)golden censer; and much (G)incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the (H)prayers of all the saints on the (I)golden altar which was before the throne.

 4And (J)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand.

 5Then the angel took the censer and (K)filled it with the fire of the altar, and (L)threw it to the earth; and there followed (M)peals of thunder and sounds and flashes of lightning and an (N)earthquake.

 6(O)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

 7The first sounded, and there came (P)hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and (Q)a third of the earth was burned up, and (R)a third of the (S)trees were burned up, and all the green (T)grass was burned up.

 8The second angel sounded, and something like a great (U)mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and (V)a third of the (W)sea became blood,

 9and (X)a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the (Y)ships were destroyed.

 10The third angel sounded, and a great star (Z)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (AA)third of the rivers and on the (AB)springs of waters.

 11The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a (AC)third of the waters became (AD)wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter.

 12The fourth angel sounded, and a (AE)third of the (AF)sun and a third of the (AG)moon and a (AH)third of the (AI)stars were struck, so that a (AJ)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (AK)third of it, and the night in the same way.

 13Then I looked, and I heard an eagle flying in (AL)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, "(AM)Woe, woe, woe to (AN)those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (AO)three angels who are about to sound!"
