Adam and Eve

First Reading: Is. 40:1-17

The Greatness of God
    1"(A)Comfort, O comfort My people," says your God.
    2"(B)Speak kindly to Jerusalem;
         And call out to her, that her (C)warfare has ended,
         That her (D)iniquity has been removed,
         That she has received of the LORD'S hand
         (E)Double for all her sins."
    3(F)A voice is calling,
         "(G)Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness;
         Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.
    4"Let every valley be lifted up,
         And every mountain and hill be made low;
         And let the rough ground become a plain,
         And the rugged terrain a broad valley;
    5Then the (H)glory of the LORD will be revealed,
         And (I)all flesh will see it together;
         For the (J)mouth of the LORD has spoken."
    6A voice says, "Call out."
         Then he answered, "What shall I call out?"
         (K)All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
    7The (L)grass withers, the flower fades,
         When the (M)breath of the LORD blows upon it;
         Surely the people are grass.
    8The grass withers, the flower fades,
         But (N)the word of our God stands forever.
    9Get yourself up on a (O)high mountain,
         O Zion, bearer of (P)good news,
         Lift up your voice mightily,
         O Jerusalem, bearer of good news;
         Lift it up, do not fear
         Say to the (Q)cities of Judah,
         "(R)Here is your God!"
    10Behold, the Lord GOD will come (S)with might,
         With His (T)arm ruling for Him
         Behold, His (U)reward is with Him
         And His recompense before Him.
    11Like a shepherd He will (V)tend His flock,
         In His arm He will gather the lambs
         And carry them in His bosom;
         He will gently lead the nursing ewes.
    12Who has (W)measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
         And marked off the heavens by the span,
         And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,
         And weighed the mountains in a balance
         And the hills in a pair of scales?
    13(X)Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,
         Or as His (Y)counselor has informed Him?
    14(Z)With whom did He consult and who (AA)gave Him understanding?
         And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
         And informed Him of the way of understanding?
    15Behold, the (AB)nations are like a drop from a bucket,
         And are regarded as a speck of (AC)dust on the scales;
         Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
    16Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,
         Nor its (AD)beasts enough for a burnt offering.
    17(AE)All the nations are as nothing before Him,
         They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.

Second Reading: Rev. 7:1-17

An Interlude
 1After this I saw (A)four angels standing at the (B)four corners of the earth, holding back (C)the four winds of the earth, (D)so that no wind would blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.

 2And I saw another angel ascending (E)from the rising of the sun, having the (F)seal of (G)the living God; and he cried out with a loud voice to the (H)four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea,

 3saying, "(I)Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we have (J)sealed the bond-servants of our God on their (K)foreheads."

The 144,000
 4And I heard the (L)number of those who were sealed, (M)one hundred and forty-four thousand sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

 5from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand,

 6from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand,

 7from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand,

 8from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Tribulation
 9After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from (N)every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing (O)before the throne and (P)before the Lamb, clothed in (Q)white robes, and (R)palm branches were in their hands;

 10and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, "(S)Salvation to our God (T)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb."

 11And all the angels were standing (U)around the throne and around (V)the elders and the (W)four living creatures; and they (X)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,

 12saying, "(Y)Amen, (Z)blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever (AA)Amen."

 13Then one of the elders (AB)answered, saying to me, "These who are clothed in the (AC)white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?"

 14I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the (AD)great tribulation, and they have (AE)washed their robes and made them (AF)white in the (AG)blood of the Lamb.

 15"For this reason, they are (AH)before the throne of God; and they (AI)serve Him day and night in His (AJ)temple; and (AK)He who sits on the throne will spread His (AL)tabernacle over them.

 16"(AM)They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat;

 17for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their (AN)shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the (AO)water of life; and (AP)God will wipe every tear from their eyes."
