Tuesday of Gaudete (Advent 3)

First Reading: Is. 34:1-2; Is. 34:8-35:10

God's Wrath against Nations
    1Draw near, (A)O nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples!
         (B)Let the earth and all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.
    2For the LORD'S (C)indignation is against all the nations,
         And His wrath against all their armies;
         He has (D)utterly destroyed them,
         He has given them over to (E)slaughter.

Cross references:Isaiah 34:1 : Ps 49:1; Is 41:1; 43:9 Isaiah 34:1 : Deut 32:1; Is 1:2 Isaiah 34:2 : Is 26:20 Isaiah 34:2 : Is 13:5; 24:1 Isaiah 34:2 : Is 30:25; 63:6; 65:12

    8For the LORD has a day of (A)vengeance,
         A year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
    9Its streams will be turned into pitch,
         And its loose earth into (B)brimstone,
         And its land will become burning pitch.
    10It will (C)not be quenched night or day;
         Its (D)smoke will go up forever
         From (E)generation to generation it will be desolate;
         (F)None will pass through it forever and ever.
    11But (G)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
         And owl and raven will dwell in it;
         And He will stretch over it the (H)line of desolation
         And the plumb line of emptiness.
    12Its nobles--there is (I)no one there
         Whom they may proclaim king--
         And all its princes will be (J)nothing.
    13Thorns will come up in its (K)fortified towers,
         Nettles and thistles in its fortified cities;
         It will also be a haunt of (L)jackals
         And an abode of ostriches.
    14The desert (M)creatures will meet with the wolves,
         The (N)hairy goat also will cry to its kind;
         Yes, the night monster will settle there
         And will find herself a resting place.
    15The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
         And it will hatch and gather them under its protection.
         Yes, (O)the hawks will be gathered there,
         Every one with its kind.

 16Seek from the (P)book of the LORD, and read:
         Not one of these will be missing;
         None will lack its mate
         For (Q)His mouth has commanded,
         And His Spirit has gathered them.
    17He has cast the (R)lot for them,
         And His hand has divided it to them by (S)line
         They shall possess it forever;
         From (T)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Zion's Happy Future
    1The (U)wilderness and the desert will be glad,
         And the (V)Arabah will rejoice and blossom;
         Like the crocus
    2It will (W)blossom profusely
         And (X)rejoice with rejoicing and shout of joy
         The (Y)glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
         The majesty of (Z)Carmel and Sharon
         They will see the (AA)glory of the LORD,
         The majesty of our God.
    3(AB)Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble.
    4Say to those with (AC)anxious heart,
         "Take courage, fear not
         Behold, your God will come with (AD)vengeance;
         The (AE)recompense of God will come,
         But He will (AF)save you."
    5Then the (AG)eyes of the blind will be opened
         And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.
    6Then the (AH)lame will leap like a deer,
         And the (AI)tongue of the mute will shout for joy
         For waters will break forth in the (AJ)wilderness
         And streams in the Arabah.
    7The scorched land will become a pool
         And the thirsty ground (AK)springs of water;
         In the (AL)haunt of jackals, its resting place,
         Grass becomes reeds and rushes.
    8(AM)A highway will be there, (AN)a roadway,
         And it will be called the Highway of (AO)Holiness
         The unclean will not travel on it,
         But it will be for him who walks that way,
         And (AP)fools will not wander on it.
    9No (AQ)lion will be there,
         Nor will any vicious beast go up on it;
         These will not be found there
         But (AR)the redeemed will walk there,
    10And (AS)the ransomed of the LORD will return
         And come with joyful shouting to Zion,
         With everlasting joy upon their heads
         They will find gladness and joy,
         And (AT)sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Second Reading: Rev. 6:1-17

The First Seal--Rider on White Horse
 1Then I saw when the (A)Lamb broke one of the (B)seven seals, and I heard one of the (C)four living creatures saying as with a (D)voice of thunder, "Come."

 2I looked, and behold, a (E)white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and (F)a crown was given to him, and he went out (G)conquering and to conquer.

The Second Seal--War
 3When He broke the second seal, I heard the (H)second living creature saying, "Come."

 4And another, (I)a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to (J)take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.

The Third Seal--Famine
 5When He broke the third seal, I heard the (K)third living creature saying, "Come " I looked, and behold, a (L)black horse; and he who sat on it had a (M)pair of scales in his hand.

 6And I heard something like a voice in the center of the (N)four living creatures saying, "A [a]quart of wheat for a [b]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and (O)do not damage the oil and the wine."

The Fourth Seal--Death
 7When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the (P)fourth living creature saying, "Come."

 8I looked, and behold, an (Q)ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name (R)Death; and (S)Hades was following with him Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (T)to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.

The Fifth Seal--Martyrs
 9When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw (U)underneath the (V)altar the (W)souls of those who had been slain (X)because of the word of God, and because of the (Y)testimony which they had maintained;

 10and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "(Z)How long, O (AA)Lord, (AB)holy and true, will You refrain from (AC)judging and avenging our blood on (AD)those who dwell on the earth?"

 11And (AE)there was given to each of them a white robe; and they were told that they should (AF)rest for a little while longer, (AG)until the number of their fellow servants and their brethren who were to be killed even as they had been, would be (AH)completed also.

The Sixth Seal--Terror
 12I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great (AI)earthquake; and the (AJ)sun became black as (AK)sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood;

 13and (AL)the stars of the sky fell to the earth, (AM)as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.

 14(AN)The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and (AO)every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

 15Then (AP)the kings of the earth and the great men and the [c]commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains;

 16and they (AQ)said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him (AR)who sits on the throne, and from the (AS)wrath of the Lamb;

 17for (AT)the great day of their wrath has come, and (AU)who is able to stand?"
