Monday of Populus Zion (Advent 2)

  1. First Reading
  2. Second Reading

First Reading · Is. 26:20-27:13

    20Come, my people, (A)enter into your rooms
         And close your doors behind you;
         Hide for a little (B)while
         Until (C)indignation runs its course.
    21For behold, the LORD is about to (D)come out from His place
         To (E)punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
         And the earth will (F)reveal her bloodshed
         And will no longer cover her slain.

The Deliverance of Israel
    1In that day (G)the LORD will punish (H)Leviathan the fleeing serpent,
         With His fierce and great and mighty sword,
         Even Leviathan the twisted serpent;
         And (I)He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.
    2In that day,
         "A (J)vineyard of wine, sing of it!
    3"I, the LORD, am its keeper;
         (K)I water it every moment
         So that no one will damage it,
         I (L)guard it night and day.
    4"I have no wrath.
         Should someone give Me (M)briars and thorns in battle,
         Then I would step on them, (N)I would burn them completely.
    5"Or let him (O)rely on My protection,
         Let him make peace with Me,
         Let him (P)make peace with Me."
    6In the days to come Jacob (Q)will take root,
         Israel will (R)blossom and sprout,
         And they will fill the whole world with (S)fruit.
    7Like the striking of Him who has struck them, has (T)He struck them?
         Or like the slaughter of His slain, have they been slain?
    8You contended with them by banishing them, by (U)driving them away
         With His fierce wind He has expelled them on the day of the (V)east wind.
    9Therefore through this Jacob's iniquity will be (W)forgiven;
         And this will be the full price of the (X)pardoning of his sin:
         When he makes all the (Y)altar stones like pulverized chalk stones;
         When Asherim and incense altars will not stand.
    10For the fortified city is (Z)isolated,
         A homestead forlorn and forsaken like the desert;
         (AA)There the calf will graze,
         And there it will lie down and feed on its branches.
    11When its (AB)limbs are dry, they are broken off;
         Women come and make a fire with them,
         For they are not a people of (AC)discernment,
         Therefore (AD)their Maker (AE)will not have compassion on them.
         And their Creator will not be gracious to them.

 12In that day the LORD (AF)will start His threshing from the flowing stream of the (AG)Euphrates to the brook of Egypt, and you will be (AH)gathered up one by one, O sons of Israel.

 13It will come about also in that day that a great (AI)trumpet will be blown, and those who were perishing in the land of (AJ)Assyria and who were scattered in the land of Egypt will come and (AK)worship the LORD in the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

Second Reading · 1 John 4:1-21

Testing the Spirits
 1(A)Beloved, do not believe every (B)spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because (C)many false prophets have gone out into the world.

 2By this you know the Spirit of God: (D)every spirit that (E)confesses that (F)Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

 3and every spirit that (G)does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the (H)antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and (I)now it is already in the world.

 4You are from God, (J)little children, and (K)have overcome them; because (L)greater is He who is in you than (M)he who is in the world.

 5(N)They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them.

 6(O)We are from God; (P)he who knows God listens to us; (Q)he who is not from God does not listen to us By this we know (R)the spirit of truth and (S)the spirit of error.

God Is Love
 7(T)Beloved, let us (U)love one another, for love is from God; and (V)everyone who loves is (W)born of God and (X)knows God.

 8The one who does not love does not know God, for (Y)God is love.

 9By this the love of God was manifested (Z)in us, that (AA)God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.

 10In this is love, (AB)not that we loved God, but that (AC)He loved us and sent His Son to be (AD)the propitiation for our sins.

 11(AE)Beloved, if God so loved us, (AF)we also ought to love one another.

 12(AG)No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His (AH)love is perfected in us.

 13(AI)By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

 14We have seen and (AJ)testify that the Father has (AK)sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.

 15(AL)Whoever confesses that (AM)Jesus is the Son of God, God (AN)abides in him, and he in God.

 16(AO)We have come to know and have believed the love which God has (AP)for us (AQ)God is love, and the one who (AR)abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

 17By this, (AS)love is perfected with us, so that we may have (AT)confidence in (AU)the day of judgment; because (AV)as He is, so also are we in this world.

 18There is no fear in love; but (AW)perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not (AX)perfected in love.

 19(AY)We love, because He first loved us.

 20(AZ)If someone says, "I love God," and (BA)hates his brother, he is a (BB)liar; for (BC)the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, (BD)cannot love God whom he has not seen.

 21And (BE)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God (BF)should love his brother also.
