Populus Zion (Advent 2)

Explanation of the Week

The Day on which our Lord will return is a "great and dreadful Day" (Mal 4:1-6). For He will come in a cloud with great power and glory. To the wicked and the proud, it will be a Day of judgment that will "burn them up." The signs preceding this Day will bring them fear and fainting. But to those who believe, who fear the name of the Lord, this Day is one to look forward to and rejoice in. "Look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near" (Lk 21:25-36) Christ our Redeemer is coming; the Sun of Righteousness is bringing healing in His wings. Let us, then, give attention to the words of the Lord, which do not pass away. Let us through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures (Rom 15:4-13) be strengthened in our hope by the Holy Spirit and watch diligently for Jesus' coming. Then, by God's grace, we shall escape all these things that will come to pass and stand before the Son of Man.

Introit

Antiphon:
Daughter of | Zion,*
     behold, surely your salvation is | coming.
The LORD will cause His glorious voice | to be heard,*
     and you shall have glad- | ness of heart. (Isaiah 30:29, 30; 62:11)

Psalm:Give ear, O Shepherd of | Israel,*
     You who lead Jacob | like a flock.
Restore | us, O God;*
     cause Your face to shine, and we | shall be saved!
Return, we beseech You, O | God of Hosts,*
     look down from heav- | en and see.
Let Your hand be upon the Man of Your | right hand,*
     upon the Son of Man whom You made strong | for Yourself. (Psalm 80:1, 3, 14, 17)

Collect (LSB)

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Your only-begotten Son, that by His coming we may be enabled to serve You with pure minds; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Collect (TLH)

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Thine only-begotten Son, so that by His coming we may be enabled to serve Thee with pure minds; through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

Excita Domine corda nostra ad praeparandas unigeniti tui vias, ut per eius adventum purificatis tibi mentibus serviamus, Qui cum Patre et Spiritu sancto vivis et regnas DEUS, per omnia secula seculorum, Amen.

The Great Day of the LORD

 1[a] "For behold,(A) the day is coming,(B) burning like an oven, when(C) all the arrogant and(D) all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2But for you(E) who fear my name,(F) the sun(G) of righteousness shall rise(H) with healing in its wings. You shall go out(I) leaping like calves from the stall. 3And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet,(J) on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts.

 4(K) "Remember(L) the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules[b] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

 5(M) "Behold, I will send you(N) Elijah the prophet(O) before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 6And he will(P) turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and(Q) strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."[c]

The Mountain of the LORD

 1It shall come to pass(A) in the latter days
   that the mountain of the house of the LORDshall be established as the highest of the mountains,
   and it shall be lifted up above the hills;and peoples shall flow to it,
 2and many nations shall come, and say:"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
   to the house of the God of Jacob,that he may teach us his ways
   and that we may walk in his paths."For out of Zion shall go forth the law,[a]
   and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 3He shall judge between many peoples,
   and shall decide for strong nations far away;and they shall(B) beat their swords into plowshares,
   and their spears into pruning hooks;nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
   neither shall they learn war anymore; 4(C) but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree,
   (D) and no one shall make them afraid,
   (E) for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken. 5For(F) all the peoples walk
   each in the name of its god,but(G) we will walk in the name of the LORD our God
   forever and ever.

The LORD Shall Rescue Zion

 6(H) In that day, declares the LORD,
   (I) I will assemble the(J) lameand gather those who have been driven away
   and those whom I have afflicted; 7and the lame I will make(K) the remnant,
   and those who were cast off, a strong nation;and(L) the LORD will reign over them(M) in Mount Zion
   from this time forth and forevermore.

Epistle: Rom. 15:4-13

4For(A) whatever was written in former days was written for our(B) instruction, that through endurance and through(C) the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you(D) to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6that together you may with one voice glorify(E) the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles
 8For I tell you that Christ(F) became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order(G) to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order(H) that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,
   (I) "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
   and sing to your name."

 10And again it is said,
   (J) "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."

 11And again,
   (K) "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
   and let all the peoples extol him."

 12And again Isaiah says,
   (L) (M) "The root of Jesse will come,
   even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;(N) in him will the Gentiles hope."

 13May the God of hope fill you with all(O) joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Gospel: Luke 21:25-36

The Coming of the Son of Man

 25"And(A) there will be signs in sun and moon(B) and stars, and on the earth(C) distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For(D) the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27And then they will see(E) the Son of Man coming in a cloud(F) with power and great glory. 28Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and(G) raise your heads, because(H) your redemption is drawing near."

The Lesson of the Fig Tree

 29And he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30As soon as they come out in leaf, you see(I) for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32(J) Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33(K) Heaven and earth will pass away, but(L) my words will not pass away.

Watch Yourselves

 34"But watch yourselves(M) lest(N) your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and(O) cares of this life, and(P) that day come upon you suddenly(Q) like a trap. 35For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36But(R) stay awake at all times,(S) praying that you may(T) have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and(U) to stand before the Son of Man."

BOOK TWO

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil[a] of(A) the Sons of Korah.

 1(B) As a deer pants for flowing streams,
   so pants my soul for you, O God. 2(C) My soul thirsts for God,
   for(D) the living God.When shall I come and(E) appear before God?[b] 3(F) My tears have been my food
   day and night,(G) while they say to me all the day long,
   "Where is your God?" 4These things I remember,
   as I(H) pour out my soul:(I) how I would go(J) with the throng
   and lead them in procession to the house of Godwith glad shouts and songs of praise,
   (K) a multitude keeping festival.

 5(L) Why are you cast down, O my soul,
   and why are you(M) in turmoil within me?(N) Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
   my salvation[c] 6and my God.

   My soul is cast down within me;
   therefore I(O) remember you(P) from the land of Jordan and of(Q) Hermon,
   from Mount Mizar. 7Deep calls to deep
   at the roar of your waterfalls;(R) all your breakers and your(S) waves
   have gone over me. 8By day the LORD(T) commands his steadfast love,
   and at(U) night his song is with me,
   a prayer to the God of my life. 9I say to God,(V) my rock:
   "Why have you forgotten me?(W) Why do I go mourning
   because of the oppression of the enemy?" 10As with a deadly wound in my bones,
   my adversaries taunt me,(X) while they say to me all the day long,
   "Where is your God?"

 11(Y) Why are you cast down, O my soul,
   and why are you in turmoil within me?Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
   my salvation and my God.

You Keep Him in Perfect Peace

 1In that day(A) this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
   "We have a strong city;
   he sets up(B) salvation
   as walls and bulwarks. 2(C) Open the gates,
   that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in. 3(D) You keep him in perfect peace
   whose mind is stayed on you,
   because he trusts in you. 4Trust in the LORD forever,
   for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. 5(E) For he has humbled
   the inhabitants of the height,
   the lofty city.He lays it low, lays it low to the ground,
   casts it to the dust. 6The foot tramples it,
   the feet of(F) the poor,
   the steps of the needy."

 7The path of the righteous is level;
   (G) you make level the way of the righteous. 8In the path of your judgments,
   O LORD, we wait for you;(H) your name and remembrance
   are the desire of our soul. 9My soul yearns for you in the night;
   my spirit within me earnestly seeks you.(I) For when your judgments are in the earth,
   the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. 10(J) If favor is shown to the wicked,
   he does not learn righteousness;in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly
   and does not see the majesty of the LORD. 11O LORD,(K) your hand is lifted up,
   but(L) they do not see it.Let them see your zeal for your people, and be ashamed.
   Let(M) the fire for your adversaries consume them. 12O LORD, you will ordain(N) peace for us,
   for you have indeed done for us all our works. 13O LORD our God,
   (O) other lords besides you have ruled over us,
   (P) but your name alone we bring to remembrance. 14They are dead, they will not live;
   they are shades, they will not arise;to that end you have visited them with destruction
   and wiped out all remembrance of them. 15(Q) But you have increased the nation, O LORD,
   you have increased the nation; you are glorified;
   (R) you have enlarged all the borders of the land.

 16O LORD,(S) in distress they sought you;
   they poured out a whispered prayer
   when your discipline was upon them. 17(T) Like a pregnant woman
   who writhes and cries out in her pangs
   when she is near to giving birth,so were we because of you, O LORD;
 18(U) we were pregnant, we writhed,
   but we have given birth to wind.We have accomplished no deliverance in the earth,
   and the inhabitants of the world have not fallen. 19(V) Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise.
   You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy!For(W) your dew is a dew of light,
   and the earth will give birth to the dead.

My Refuge and My Fortress

 1He who dwells in(A) the shelter of the Most High
   will abide in(B) the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say[a] to the LORD, "My(C) refuge and my(D) fortress,
   my God, in whom I(E) trust."

 3For he will deliver you from(F) the snare of the fowler
   and from the deadly pestilence. 4He will(G) cover you with his pinions,
   and under his(H) wings you will(I) find refuge;
   his(J) faithfulness is(K) a shield and buckler. 5(L) You will not fear(M) the terror of the night,
   nor the arrow that flies by day, 6nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
   nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

 7A thousand may fall at your side,
   ten thousand at your right hand,
   but it will not come near you. 8You will only look with your eyes
   and(N) see the recompense of the wicked.

 9Because you have made the LORD your(O) dwelling place—
   the Most High, who is my(P) refuge[b]— 10(Q) no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
   (R) no plague come near your tent.

 11(S) For he will command his(T) angels concerning you
   to(U) guard you in all your ways. 12On their hands they will bear you up,
   lest you(V) strike your foot against a stone. 13You will tread on(W) the lion and the(X) adder;
   the young lion and(Y) the serpent you will(Z) trample underfoot.

 14"Because he(AA) holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
   I will protect him, because he(AB) knows my name. 15When he(AC) calls to me, I will answer him;
   I will be with him in trouble;

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-24

 1See(A) what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called(B) children of God; and so we are. The reason why(C) the world does not know us is that(D) it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are(E) God’s children(F) now, and what we will be(G) has not yet appeared; but we know that(H) when he appears[a](I) we shall be like him, because(J) we shall see him as he is. 3And everyone who(K) thus hopes in him(L) purifies himself as he is pure.

 4Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness;(M) sin is lawlessness. 5You know that(N) he appeared to(O) take away sins, and(P) in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning;(Q) no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7Little children,(R) let no one deceive you.(S) Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8(T) Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was(U) to destroy the works of the devil. 9(V) No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s[b] seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God,(W) nor is the one who(X) does not love his brother.

Love One Another
 11For(Y) this is the message that you have heard from the beginning,(Z) that we should love one another. 12We should not be like(AA) Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him?(AB) Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13Do not be surprised, brothers,[c](AC) that the world hates you. 14We know that(AD) we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15(AE) Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that(AF) no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

 16By this we know love, that(AG) he laid down his life for us, and(AH) we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17But(AI) if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet(AJ) closes his heart against him,(AK) how does God’s love abide in him? 18Little children, let us not(AL) love in word or talk but in deed and(AM) in truth.

 19By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21Beloved,(AN) if our heart does not condemn us,(AO) we have confidence before God; 22and(AP) whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and(AQ) do what pleases him. 23And this is his commandment,(AR) that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and(AS) love one another,(AT) just as he has commanded us. 24(AU) Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God,[d] and God[e] in him. And(AV) by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.
