Wednesday of Ad Te Levavi (Advent 1)

First Reading: Is. 11:1-12:6

The Righteous Reign of the Branch

 1There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of(A) Jesse,
   and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2And(B) the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him,
   the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
   the Spirit of counsel and might,
   the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.(C) He shall not judge by(D) what his eyes see,
   or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4but(E) with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
   and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;and he shall(F) strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
   and(G) with the breath of his lips(H) he shall kill the wicked. 5Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
   and(I) faithfulness the belt of his loins.

 6(J) The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
   and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
   and a little child shall lead them. 7The cow and the bear shall graze;
   their young shall lie down together;
   and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
   and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. 9(K) They shall not hurt or destroy
   in all(L) my holy mountain;(M) for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD
   as the waters cover the sea.

 10In that day(N) the root of(O) Jesse, who shall stand as(P) a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

 11(Q) In that day the Lord will extend his hand yet a second time to recover the remnant that remains of his people,(R) from Assyria,(S) from Egypt, from(T) Pathros, from(U) Cush,[a] from(V) Elam, from(W) Shinar, from(X) Hamath, and from the coastlands of the sea.
 12He will raise(Y) a signal for the nations
   and will assemble(Z) the banished of Israel,and gather the dispersed of Judah
   from the four corners of the earth. 13(AA) The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart,
   and those who harass Judah shall be cut off;Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah,
   and Judah shall not harass Ephraim. 14(AB) But they shall swoop down on the shoulder of the Philistines in the west,
   and together they shall plunder(AC) the people of the east.They shall put out their hand(AD) against(AE) Edom and(AF) Moab,
   and(AG) the Ammonites shall obey them. 15And the LORD will utterly destroy[b]
   (AH) the tongue of the Sea of Egypt,and will wave his hand over(AI) the River
   with his scorching breath,[c]and strike it into seven channels,
   and he will lead people across in sandals. 16And there will be(AJ) a highway from Assyria
   for the remnant that remains of his people,(AK) as there was for Israel
   when they came up from the land of Egypt.

The LORD Is My Strength and My Song

 1You[d] will say(AL) in that day:"I will give thanks to you, O LORD,
   for though you were angry with me,(AM) your anger turned away,
   that you might comfort me.

 2"Behold, God is my salvation;
   I will trust, and will not be afraid;for(AN) the LORD GOD[e] is my strength and my song,
   and he has become my salvation."

 3(AO) With joy you[f] will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4(AP) And you will say in that day:
   (AQ) "Give thanks to the LORD,
   call upon his name,(AR) make known his deeds among the peoples,
   proclaim(AS) that his name is exalted.

 5(AT) "Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;
   let this be made known[g] in all the earth. 6Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
   for great(AU) in your[h] midst is(AV) the Holy One of Israel."

Second Reading: 2 Pt. 2:1-22

False Prophets and Teachers

 1But(A) false prophets also arose among the people,(B) just as there will be false teachers among you, who will(C) secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master(D) who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth(E) will be blasphemed. 3And(F) in their greed they will exploit you(G) with false words.(H) Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

 4For if God did not spare(I) angels when they sinned, but(J) cast them into hell[a] and committed them to chains[b] of gloomy darkness(K) to be kept until the judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world, but(L) preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought(M) a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6if by(N) turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction,(O) making them an example of(P) what is going to happen to the ungodly;[c] 7and(Q) if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8(for as that righteous man lived among them day after day,(R) he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9then(S) the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,[d] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10and especially(T) those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and(U) despise authority.

   Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11(V) whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord. 12(W) But these, like irrational animals,(X) creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed, blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant, will also be destroyed in their destruction, 13suffering wrong as(Y) the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure(Z) to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions,[e] while(AA) they feast with you. 14They have eyes full of adultery,(AB) insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts(AC) trained in greed.(AD) Accursed children! 15Forsaking the right way,(AE) they have gone astray. They have followed(AF) the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved(AG) gain from wrongdoing, 16but was rebuked for his own transgression;(AH) a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

 17(AI) These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm.(AJ) For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. 18For,(AK) speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely(AL) escaping from those who live in error. 19They promise them(AM) freedom,(AN) but they themselves are slaves[f] of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20For if,(AO) after they have escaped the defilements of the world(AP) through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome,(AQ) the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For(AR) it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from(AS) the holy commandment delivered to them. 22What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The(AT) dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire."
