Ad Te Levavi (Advent 1)

Explanation of the Week

The new church year begins by focusing on the humble coming of our Lord. "Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey." Even as He was born in a lowly manger, so Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a beast of burden. For He bears the sin of the world. He is the Son of David riding to His enthronement on the cross, where He shows Himself to be "The Lord, our Righteousness" (Jer 23:5-8). Our Lord still comes in great humility to deliver His righteousness to us in the Word and Sacraments. Before receiving Christ's body and blood, we also sing, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" (Mt 21:1-9) And as we receive the Sacrament, we set our hearts on His return in glory, for "Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed" (Rom 13:11-14).

Collect (LSB)

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Collect (TLH)

Stir up, we beseech Thee, Thy power, O Lord, and come, that by Thy protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Thy mighty deliverance; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Collecta Latina

Old Testament (LSB): Jer. 23:5-8

    5"Behold, the (A)days are coming," declares the LORD,
         "When I will raise up for David a righteous (B)Branch;
         And He will (C)reign as king and act wisely
         And (D)do justice and righteousness in the land.
    6"In His days Judah will be saved,
         And (E)Israel will dwell securely;
         And this is His (F)name by which He will be called,
         'The (G)LORD our righteousness.'

 7"(H)Therefore behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "when they will no longer say, 'As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt,'

 8(I)but, 'As the LORD lives, who (J)brought up and led back the descendants of the household of Israel from the north land and from all the countries where I had driven them.' Then they will live on their own soil."

The Davidic Kingdom

 14'Behold, (A)days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will (B)fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

 15'In those days and at that time I will cause a (C)righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute (D)justice and righteousness on the earth.

 16'In those days (E)Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: the (F)LORD is our righteousness.'

Epistle: Rom. 13:11-14

 11Do this, knowing the time, that it is (A)already the hour for you to (B)awaken from sleep; for now [a]salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.

 12(C)The night is almost gone, and (D)the day is near Therefore let us lay aside (E)the deeds of darkness and put on (F)the armor of light.

 13Let us (G)behave properly as in the day, (H)not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.

 14But (I)put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh (J)in regard to its lusts.

Gospel: Matt. 21:1-9

The Triumphal Entry

 1(A)When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at (B)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

 2saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me.

 3"If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."

 4(C)This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
    5"(D)SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION,
         'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU,
         GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY,
         EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'"

 6The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,

 7and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.

 8Most of the crowd (E)spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.

 9The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
         "Hosanna to the (F)Son of David;
         (G)BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
         Hosanna (H)in the highest!"

Offertory

To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in You; Let me not be ashamed; Let not my enemies triumph over me. Let no one who waits on You be ashamed. (Psalm 25)

Matins Psalm(s): Ps. 1

The Righteous and the Wicked Contrasted.

BOOK 1

    1How blessed is the man who (A)does not walk in the (B)counsel of the wicked,
         Nor stand in the (C)path of sinners,
         Nor (D)sit in the seat of scoffers!
    2But his (E)delight is (F)in the law of the LORD,
         And in His law he meditates (G)day and (H)night.
    3He will be like (I)a tree firmly planted by streams of water,
         Which yields its fruit in its season
         And its leaf does not wither;
         And in whatever he does, (J)he prospers.
    4The wicked are not so,
         But they are like (K)chaff which the wind drives away.
    5Therefore (L)the wicked will not stand in the (M)judgment,
         Nor sinners in (N)the assembly of the righteous.
    6For the LORD (O)knows the way of the righteous,
         But the way of (P)the wicked will perish.

First Reading: Is. 8:9-9:7

A Believing Remnant

    9"(A)Be broken, O peoples, and be (B)shattered;
         And give ear, all remote places of the earth.
         Gird yourselves, yet be shattered;
         Gird yourselves, yet be shattered.
    10"(C)Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted;
         State a proposal, but (D)it will not stand,
         For (E)God is with us."

 11For thus the LORD spoke to me with (F)mighty power and instructed me (G)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,
    12"You are not to say, 'It is a (H)conspiracy!'
         In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy,
         And (I)you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.
    13"It is the (J)LORD of hosts (K)whom you should regard as holy.
         And He shall be your fear,
         And He shall be your dread.
    14"Then He shall become a (L)sanctuary;
         But to both the houses of Israel, a (M)stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
         And a snare and a (N)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
    15"Many (O)will stumble over them,
         Then they will fall and be broken;
         They will even be snared and caught."

 16(P)Bind up the testimony, (Q)seal the law among (R)my disciples.

 17And I will (S)wait for the LORD (T)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him.

 18(U)Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for (V)signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who (W)dwells on Mount Zion.

 19When they say to you, "(X)Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter," should not a people (Y)consult their God? Should they (Z)consult the dead on behalf of the living?

 20To the (AA)law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because (AB)they have no dawn.

 21They will pass through the land (AC)hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward.

 22Then they will (AD)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be (AE)driven away into darkness.

Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

 1But there will be no more (AF)gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He (AG)treated the (AH)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.
    2(AI)The people who walk in darkness
         Will see a great light;
         Those who live in a dark land,
         The light will shine on them.
    3(AJ)You shall multiply the nation,
         You (AK)shall increase their gladness;
         They will be glad in Your presence
         As with the gladness of harvest,
         As (AL)men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
    4For (AM)You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
         The rod of their (AN)oppressor, as at the battle of (AO)Midian.
    5For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
         And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
    6For a (AP)child will be born to us, a (AQ)son will be given to us;
         And the (AR)government will rest (AS)on His shoulders;
         And His name will be called (AT)Wonderful Counselor, (AU)Mighty God,
         Eternal (AV)Father, Prince of (AW)Peace.
    7There will be (AX)no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
         On the (AY)throne of David and over his kingdom,
         To establish it and to uphold it with (AZ)justice and righteousness
         From then on and forevermore
         (BA)The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

Vespers Psalm(s): Ps. 143

Prayer for Deliverance and Guidance.

A Psalm of David.

    1Hear my prayer, O LORD,
         (A)Give ear to my supplications!
         Answer me in Your (B)faithfulness, in Your (C)righteousness!
    2And (D)do not enter into judgment with Your servant,
         For in Your sight (E)no man living is righteous.
    3For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
         He has crushed my life (F)to the ground;
         He (G)has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead.
    4Therefore (H)my spirit is overwhelmed within me;
         My heart is [a](I)appalled within me.
    5I (J)remember the days of old;
         I (K)meditate on all Your doings;
         I (L)muse on the work of Your hands.
    6I (M)stretch out my hands to You;
         My (N)soul longs for You, as a parched land. Selah.
    7(O)Answer me quickly, O LORD, my (P)spirit fails;
         (Q)Do not hide Your face from me,
         Or I will become like (R)those who go down to the pit.
    8Let me hear Your (S)lovingkindness (T)in the morning;
         For I trust (U)in You;
         Teach me the (V)way in which I should walk;
         For to You I (W)lift up my soul.
    9(X)Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies;
         I take refuge in You.
    10(Y)Teach me to do Your will,
         For You are my God;
         Let (Z)Your good Spirit (AA)lead me on level ground.
    11(AB)For the sake of Your name, O LORD, (AC)revive me
         (AD)In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.
    12And in Your lovingkindness, (AE)cut off my enemies
         And (AF)destroy all those who afflict my soul,
         For (AG)I am Your servant.

Second Reading: 1 Pt. 4:1-19

Keep Fervent in Your Love
 1Therefore, since (A)Christ has [a]suffered in the flesh, (B)arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because (C)he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,

 2(D)so as to live (E)the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the (F)will of God.

 3For (G)the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, (H)having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries.

 4In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of (I)dissipation, and they (J)malign you;

 5but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge (K)the living and the dead.

 6For (L)the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.

 7(M)The end of all things is near; therefore, (N)be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.

 8Above all, (O)keep fervent in your love for one another, because (P)love covers a multitude of sins.

 9(Q)Be hospitable to one another without (R)complaint.

 10(S)As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good (T)stewards of the manifold grace of God.

 11(U)Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the (V)utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving (W)by the strength which God supplies; so that (X)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, (Y)to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Share the Sufferings of Christ
 12(Z)Beloved, do not be surprised at the (AA)fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;

 13but to the degree that you (AB)share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the (AC)revelation of His glory (AD)you may rejoice with exultation.

 14If you are reviled (AE)for the name of Christ, (AF)you are blessed, (AG)because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

 15Make sure that (AH)none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a (AI)troublesome meddler;

 16but if anyone suffers as a (AJ)Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to (AK)glorify God in this name.

 17For it is time for judgment (AL)to begin with (AM)the household of God; and if it (AN)begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those (AO)who do not obey the (AP)gospel of God?

 18(AQ)AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE (AR)GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?

 19Therefore, those also who suffer according to (AS)the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
