Saturday of Last Sunday

First Reading: Is. 7:10-8:8

The Child Immanuel

 10Then the LORD spoke again to Ahaz, saying,

 11"Ask a (A)sign for yourself from the LORD your God; make it deep as Sheol or high as heaven."

 12But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I test the LORD!"

 13Then he said, "Listen now, O (B)house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will (C)try the patience of (D)my God as well?

 14"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, (E)a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name [a](F)Immanuel.

 15"He will eat (G)curds and honey at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good.

 16"(H)For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, (I)the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.

Trials to Come for Judah

 17"The LORD will bring on you, on your people, and on your father's house such days as have never come since the day that (J)Ephraim separated from Judah, the (K)king of Assyria."

 18In that day the LORD will (L)whistle for the fly that is in the (M)remotest part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

 19They will all come and settle on the steep ravines, on the (N)ledges of the cliffs, (O)on all the thorn bushes and on all the watering places.

 20In that day the Lord will (P)shave with a (Q)razor, (R)hired from regions beyond (S)the Euphrates (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.

 21Now in that day a man may keep alive a (T)heifer and a pair of sheep;

 22and because of the abundance of the milk produced he will eat curds, for everyone that is left within the land will eat (U)curds and honey.

 23And it will come about in that day, (V)that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become (W)briars and thorns.

 24People will come there with bows and arrows because all the land will be briars and thorns.

 25As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the hoe, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for (X)pasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

Damascus and Samaria Fall

 1Then the LORD said to me, "Take for yourself a large tablet and (Y)write on it in ordinary letters: (Z)Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey.

 2"And I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, (AA)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah."

 3So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the LORD said to me, "Name him [b](AB)Maher-shalal-hash-baz;

 4for (AC)before the boy knows how to cry out 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of (AD)Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria."

 5Again the LORD spoke to me further, saying,
    6"Inasmuch as these people have (AE)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
         And rejoice in (AF)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
    7"Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the (AG)strong and abundant waters of the (AH)Euphrates,
         Even the (AI)king of Assyria and all his glory;
         And it will (AJ)rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks.
    8"Then (AK)it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
         It will (AL)reach even to the neck;
         And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O (AM)Immanuel.

Second Reading: 1 Pt. 3:1-22

Godly Living
 1(A)In the same way, you wives, (B)be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be (C)won without a word by the behavior of their wives,

 2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.

 3(D)Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;

 4but let it be (E)the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.

 5For in this way in former times the holy women also, (F)who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;

 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (G)calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right (H)without being frightened by any fear.

 7(I)You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with (J)someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

 8To sum up, (K)all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, (L)brotherly, (M)kindhearted, and (N)humble in spirit;

 9(O)not returning evil for evil or (P)insult for insult, but giving a (Q)blessing instead; for (R)you were called for the very purpose that you might (S)inherit a blessing.

 10For,
         "(T)THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS,
         MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.
    11"(U)HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD;
         HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.
    12"(V)FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS,
         AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER,
         BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."

 13(W)Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?

 14But even if you should (X)suffer for the sake of righteousness, (Y)you are blessed (Z)AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,

 15but [a]sanctify (AA)Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready (AB)to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the (AC)hope that is in you, yet (AD)with gentleness and (AE)reverence;

 16and keep a (AF)good conscience so that in the thing in which (AG)you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

 17For (AH)it is better, (AI)if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.

 18For (AJ)Christ also died for sins (AK)once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might (AL)bring us to God, having been put to death (AM)in the flesh, but made alive (AN)in the spirit;

 19in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,

 20who once were disobedient, when the (AO)patience of God (AP)kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of (AQ)the ark, in which a few, that is, (AR)eight (AS)persons, were brought safely through the water.

 21(AT)Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you--(AU)not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a (AV)good conscience--through (AW)the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

 22(AX)who is at the right hand of God, (AY)having gone into heaven, (AZ)after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
