Wednesday of Trinity 9

First Reading: 1 Sam. 17:1-19

Goliath's Challenge

 1Now (A)the Philistines gathered their armies for battle; and they were gathered at Socoh which belongs to Judah, and they camped between (B)Socoh and (C)Azekah, in (D)Ephes-dammim.

 2Saul and the men of Israel were gathered and camped in (E)the valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array to encounter the Philistines.

 3The Philistines stood on the mountain on one side while Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.

 4Then a champion came out from the armies of the Philistines named (F)Goliath, from (G)Gath, whose height was six [a]cubits and a span.

 5He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was clothed with scale-armor which weighed five thousand shekels of bronze.

 6He also had bronze [b]greaves on his legs and a (H)bronze javelin slung between his shoulders.

 7(I)The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed six hundred shekels of iron; (J)his shield-carrier also walked before him.

 8He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel and said to them, "Why do you come out to draw up in battle array? Am I not the Philistine and you (K)servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me.

 9"(L)If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us."

 10Again the Philistine said, "(M)I defy the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man that we may fight together."

 11When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

 12Now David was (N)the son of the (O)Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse, and (P)he had eight sons. And Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men.

 13The three older sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle. And (Q)the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

 14(R)David was the youngest. Now the three oldest followed Saul,

 15(S)but David went back and forth from Saul (T)to tend his father's flock at Bethlehem.

 16The Philistine came forward morning and evening for forty days and took his stand.

 17Then Jesse said to David his son, "(U)Take now for your brothers an ephah of this roasted grain and these ten loaves and run to the camp to your brothers.

 18"(V)Bring also these ten cuts of cheese to the commander of their thousand, (W)and look into the welfare of your brothers, and bring back news of them.

 19"For Saul and they and all the men of Israel are in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines."

Second Reading: Acts 26:1-23

Paul's Defense before Agrippa

 1(A)Agrippa said to Paul, "You are permitted to speak for yourself." Then Paul stretched out his hand and proceeded to make his defense:

 2"In regard to all the things of which I am accused by the Jews, I consider myself fortunate, King Agrippa, that I am about to make my defense before you today;

 3especially because you are an expert in all (B)customs and questions among the Jews; therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently.

 4"So then, all Jews know (C)my manner of life from my youth up, which from the beginning was spent among my own nation and at Jerusalem;

 5since they have known about me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that I lived as a (D)Pharisee (E)according to the strictest (F)sect of our religion.

 6"And now I am standing trial (G)for the hope of (H)the promise made by God to our fathers;

 7the promise (I)to which our twelve tribes hope to attain, as they earnestly serve God night and day And for this (J)hope, O King, I am being (K)accused by Jews.

 8"Why is it considered incredible among you people (L)if God does raise the dead?

 9"So then, (M)I thought to myself that I had to do many things hostile to (N)the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

 10"And this is just what I (O)did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, having (P)received authority from the chief priests, but also when they were being put to death I (Q)cast my vote against them.

 11"And (R)as I punished them often in all the synagogues, I tried to force them to blaspheme; and being (S)furiously enraged at them, I kept pursuing them (T)even to foreign cities.

 12"While so engaged (U)as I was journeying to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,

 13at midday, O King, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining all around me and those who were journeying with me.

 14"And when we had (V)all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the (W)Hebrew dialect, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

 15"And I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.

 16'But get up and (X)stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to (Y)appoint you a (Z)minister and (AA)a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you;

 17(AB)rescuing you (AC)from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you,

 18to (AD)open their eyes so that they may turn from (AE)darkness to light and from the dominion of (AF)Satan to God, that they may receive (AG)forgiveness of sins and an (AH)inheritance among those who have been sanctified by (AI)faith in Me.'

 19"So, King Agrippa, I did not prove disobedient to the heavenly vision,

 20but kept declaring both (AJ)to those of Damascus first, and also (AK)at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even (AL)to the Gentiles, that they should (AM)repent and turn to God, performing deeds (AN)appropriate to repentance.

 21"For this reason some Jews (AO)seized me in the temple and tried (AP)to put me to death.

 22"So, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day (AQ)testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what (AR)the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place;

 23(AS)that the Christ was to suffer, and that (AT)by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first to proclaim (AU)light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles."
