First Reading: Prov. 10:1-23

The Proverbs of Solomon

 1(A) The proverbs of Solomon.
   (B) A wise son makes a glad father,
   (C) but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother. 2(D) Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,
   (E) but righteousness delivers from death. 3(F) The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry,
   (G) but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. 4A slack hand(H) causes poverty,
   (I) but the hand of the diligent makes rich. 5He who(J) gathers in summer is a prudent son,
   but he who sleeps in harvest is(K) a son who brings shame. 6Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
   but(L) the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. 7(M) The memory of the righteous is a blessing,
   but(N) the name of the wicked will rot. 8(O) The wise of heart will receive commandments,
   but a babbling fool will come to ruin. 9(P) Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
   but he who makes his ways crooked(Q) will be found out. 10Whoever(R) winks the eye causes trouble,
   but a babbling fool will come to ruin. 11(S) The mouth of the righteous is(T) a fountain of life,
   but the mouth of the wicked(U) conceals violence. 12Hatred stirs up strife,
   but(V) love covers all offenses. 13On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,
   but(W) a rod is for the back of him who(X) lacks sense. 14The wise(Y) lay up knowledge,
   but(Z) the mouth of a fool brings ruin near. 15(AA) A rich man’s wealth is his strong city;
   the poverty of the poor is their ruin. 16The wage of the righteous leads(AB) to life,
   the gain of the wicked to sin. 17Whoever heeds instruction is on(AC) the path to life,
   but he who rejects reproof leads others astray. 18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,
   and whoever utters slander is a fool. 19(AD) When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
   (AE) but whoever restrains his lips is prudent. 20The tongue of the righteous is(AF) choice silver;
   the heart of the wicked is of little worth. 21The lips of the righteous feed many,
   but fools die for(AG) lack of sense. 22(AH) The blessing of the LORD makes rich,
   and he adds no sorrow with it.[a] 23Doing wrong is(AI) like a joke to a fool,
   but(AJ) wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

Second Reading: John 14:1-17

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

 1(A) "Let not your hearts be troubled.(B) Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. 2In(C) my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that(D) I go to prepare a place for you?[b] 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you(E) to myself, that(F) where I am you may be also. 4And you know the way to where I am going."[c] 5(G) Thomas said to him, "Lord,(H) we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" 6Jesus said to him, "I am(I) the way, and(J) the truth, and(K) the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7(L) If you had known me, you would have(M) known my Father also.[d] From now on you do know him and(N) have seen him."

 8(O) Philip said to him, "Lord,(P) show us the Father, and it is enough for us." 9Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip?(Q) Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10Do you not believe that(R) I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you(S) I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that(T) I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else(U) believe on account of the works themselves.

 12"Truly, truly, I say to you,(V) whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I(W) am going to the Father. 13(X) Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that(Y) the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14(Z) If you ask me[e] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

 15(AA) "If you love me, you will(AB) keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another(AC) Helper,[f] to be with you forever, 17even(AD) the Spirit of truth,(AE) whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and(AF) will be in you.
