Saturday of Trinity 1

First Reading: Prov. 8:1-21

The Excellence of Wisdom

 1 Does not wisdom cry out,
      And understanding lift up her voice?
       2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill,
      Beside the way, where the paths meet.
       3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
      At the entrance of the doors:
       4 “ To you, O men, I call,
      And my voice is to the sons of men.
       5 O you simple ones, understand prudence,
      And you fools, be of an understanding heart.
       6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things,
      And from the opening of my lips will come right things;
       7 For my mouth will speak truth;
      Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
       8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
      Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.
       9 They are all plain to him who understands,
      And right to those who find knowledge.
       10 Receive my instruction, and not silver,
      And knowledge rather than choice gold;
       11 For wisdom is better than rubies,
      And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
       12 “ I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,
      And find out knowledge and discretion.
       13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;
      Pride and arrogance and the evil way
      And the perverse mouth I hate.
       14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom;
      I am understanding, I have strength.
       15 By me kings reign,
      And rulers decree justice.
       16 By me princes rule, and nobles,
      All the judges of the earth.[a]
       17 I love those who love me,
      And those who seek me diligently will find me.
       18 Riches and honor are with me,
      Enduring riches and righteousness.
       19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold,
      And my revenue than choice silver.
       20 I traverse the way of righteousness,
      In the midst of the paths of justice,
       21 That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth,
      That I may fill their treasuries.

Second Reading: John 12:37-50

Who Has Believed Our Report?

    37 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
      “ Lord, who has believed our report?
      And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”[a] 39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
       40 “ He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
       Lest they should see with their eyes,
      Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
      So that I should heal them.”[b]

 41 These things Isaiah said when[c] he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Walk in the Light

    42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. 44 Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe,[d] I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”
