Athanasius of Alexandria, Pastor and Confessor

First Reading: Lev. 23:23-44

23Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

24"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, '(A)In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a (B)reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

25'You shall (C)not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD.'"

The Day of Atonement
26The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

27"On exactly (D)the tenth day of this seventh month is (E)the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering by fire to the LORD.

28"You shall not do any work on this same day, for it is a (F)day of atonement, (G)to make atonement on your behalf before the LORD your God.

29"If there is any person who will not humble himself on this same day, (H)he shall be cut off from his people.

30"As for any person who does any work on this same day, that person I will destroy from among his people.

31"You shall do no work at all. It is to be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.

32"It is to be a sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall humble your souls; on the ninth of the month at evening, from evening until evening you shall keep your sabbath."

33Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

34"Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'On (I)the fifteenth of this seventh month is the (J)Feast of Booths for seven days to the LORD.

35'On the first day is a holy convocation; you shall do (K)no laborious work of any kind.

36'(L)For seven days you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD On (M)the eighth day you shall have a holy convocation and present an offering by fire to the LORD; it is an assembly. You shall do no laborious work.

37'These are (N)the appointed times of the LORD which you shall proclaim as holy convocations, to present offerings by fire to the LORD--burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, (O)each day's matter on its own day--

38besides those of the sabbaths of the LORD, and besides your gifts and besides all your votive and freewill offerings, which you give to the LORD.

39'On exactly the fifteenth day of the seventh month, (P)when you have gathered in the crops of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the LORD for seven days, with a rest on the first day and a rest on the eighth day.

40'Now on the first day you shall take for yourselves the foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days.

41'You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to the LORD for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

42'You shall live (Q)in booths for seven days; all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths,

43so that (R)your generations may know that I had the sons of Israel live in booths when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.'"

44So Moses declared to the sons of Israel (S)the appointed times of the LORD.

Second Reading: Lk. 12:35-53

Be in Readiness

35"(A)Be dressed in (B)readiness, and keep your lamps lit.

36"Be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes and knocks.

37"Blessed are those slaves whom the master will find (C)on the alert when he comes; truly I say to you, that (D)he will gird himself to serve, and have them recline at the table, and will come up and wait on them.

38"(E)Whether he comes in the [a]second watch, or even in the [b]third, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.

39"(F)But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have allowed his house to be (G)broken into.

40"(H)You too, be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect."

41Peter said, "Lord, are You addressing this parable to us, or (I)to everyone else as well?"

42And (J)the Lord said, "(K)Who then is the faithful and sensible (L)steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time?

43"Blessed is that (M)slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes.

44"Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

 45"But if that slave says in his heart, 'My master will be a long time in coming,' and begins to beat the slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk;

46the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47"And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will (N)receive many lashes,

48but the one who did not (O)know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few (P)From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.

Christ Divides Men

49"I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!

50"But I have a (Q)baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

 51"(R)Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division;

52for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three.

53"They will be divided, (S)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
