Palmarum (Palm Sunday)

Explanation of the Week

"Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly, and sitting on a donkey." (Zech 9:9-12; Mt 21:1-9) Our Lord rides in this humble fashion because He is entering Jerusalem to humble Himself even to the point of death on a cross. (Phil 2:5-11) His kingly crown will not be made of gold but of thorns, the sign of sin's curse. For His royal reign is displayed in bearing this curse for His people, saving us from our enemies by sacrificing His own life. The sinless One takes the place of the sinner so that the sinner can be freed and bear the name "Barabbas," "son of the Father." (Matthew 26 and 27) It is at the name of this exalted Savior, Jesus, that we bow in humble faith. With the centurion who declared, "Truly this was the Son of God!" we are given to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Deliverance of Judah and Ephraim
    11As for you also, because of the (L)blood of My covenant with you,
         I have set your (M)prisoners free from the waterless pit.
    12Return to the (N)stronghold, O prisoners who have the (O)hope;
         This very day I am declaring that I will restore (P)double to you.

 5(A)Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in (B)Christ Jesus,

 6who, although He (C)existed in the (D)form of God, (E)did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

 7but [a](F)emptied Himself, taking the form of a (G)bond-servant, and (H)being made in the likeness of men.

 8Being found in appearance as a man, (I)He humbled Himself by becoming (J)obedient to the point of death, even (K)death on a cross.

 9(L)For this reason also, God (M)highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him (N)the name which is above every name,

 10so that at the name of Jesus (O)EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of (P)those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is (Q)Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Gospel: Matt. 21:1-9

The Triumphal Entry

 1(A)When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at (B)the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

 2saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me.

 3"If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."

 4(C)This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
    5"(D)SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION,
         'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU,
         GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY,
         EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'"

 6The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,

 7and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.

 8Most of the crowd (E)spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.

 9The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
         "Hosanna to the (F)Son of David;
         (G)BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
         Hosanna (H)in the highest!"

Confidence in God's Protection.

For the choir director; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

    1(A)Hear my cry, O God;
         (B)Give heed to my prayer.
    2From the (C)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (D)faint;
         Lead me to (E)the rock that is higher than I.
    3For You have been a (F)refuge for me,
         A (G)tower of strength against the enemy.
    4Let me (H)dwell in Your tent forever;
         Let me (I)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.
    5For You have heard my (J)vows, O God;
         You have given me the inheritance of those who (K)fear Your name.
    6You will (L)prolong the king's life;
         His years will be as many generations.
    7He will abide (M)before God forever;
         Appoint (N)lovingkindness and truth that they may preserve him.
    8So I will (O)sing praise to Your name forever,
         That I may (P)pay my vows day by day.

First Reading: Ex. 8:1-32

Frogs over the Land
 1Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, "(A)Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

 2"But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite your whole territory with frogs.

 3"The Nile will (B)swarm with frogs, which will come up and go into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and on your people, and into your ovens and into your kneading bowls.

 4"So the frogs will come up on you and your people and all your servants."'"

 5Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, '(C)Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the streams and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.'"

 6So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the (D)frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.

 7(E)The magicians did the same with their secret arts, making frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

 8Then Pharaoh (F)called for Moses and Aaron and said, "(G)Entreat the LORD that He remove the frogs from me and from my people; and (H)I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the LORD."

 9Moses said to Pharaoh, "The honor is yours to tell me: when shall I entreat for you and your servants and your people, that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses, that they may be left only in the Nile?"

 10Then he said, "Tomorrow." So he said, "May it be according to your word, that you may know that there is (I)no one like the LORD our God.

 11"The (J)frogs will depart from you and your houses and your servants and your people; they will be left only in the Nile."

 12Then Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and (K)Moses cried to the LORD concerning the frogs which He had inflicted upon Pharaoh.

 13The LORD did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courts, and the fields.

 14So they piled them in heaps, and the land became foul.

 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and (L)did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

The Plague of flies
 16Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become [a]gnats through all the land of Egypt.'"

 17They did so; and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became (M)gnats through all the land of Egypt.

 18The magicians tried with their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but (N)they could not; so there were gnats on man and beast.

 19Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "(O)This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

 20Now the LORD said to Moses, "(P)Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh, as (Q)he comes out to the water, and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, "(R)Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

 21"For if you do not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and on your servants and on your people and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians will be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they dwell.

 22"(S)But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where My people are living, so that no swarms of flies will be there, in order that you may know that (T)I, the LORD, am in the midst of the land.

 23"I will [b]put a division between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will occur."'"

 24Then the LORD did so. And there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and the land was (U)laid waste because of the swarms of flies in all the land of Egypt.

 25Pharaoh (V)called for Moses and Aaron and said, "(W)Go, sacrifice to your God within the land."

 26But Moses said, "It is not right to do so, for we will sacrifice to the LORD our God what is (X)an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not then stone us?

 27"We must go a (Y)three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as He commands us."

 28Pharaoh said, "(Z)I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away (AA)Make supplication for me."

 29Then Moses said, "Behold, I am going out from you, and I shall make supplication to the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow; only do not let Pharaoh (AB)deal deceitfully again in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."

 30So (AC)Moses went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the LORD.

 31The LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people; not one remained.

 32But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and (AD)he did not let the people go.

         (D)Your salvation among all nations.

God's Final Word in His Son

 1God, after He (A)spoke long ago to the fathers in (B)the prophets in many portions and (C)in many ways,

 2(D)in these last days (E)has spoken to us in (F)His Son, whom He appointed (G)heir of all things, (H)through whom also He made the (I)world.

 3And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact (J)representation of His nature, and (K)upholds all things by the word of His power When He had made (L)purification of sins, He (M)sat down at the right hand of the (N)Majesty on high,

 4having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent (O)name than they.

 5For to which of the angels did He ever say,
         "(P)YOU ARE MY SON,
         TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"?
         And again,
         "(Q)I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM
         AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"?

 6And when He again (R)brings the firstborn into (S)the world, He says,
         "(T)AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."

 7And of the angels He says,
         "(U)WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS,
         AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE."

 8But of the Son He says,
         "(V)YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER,
         AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF [a]HIS KINGDOM.
    9"(W)YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS;
         (X)THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS (Y)ANOINTED YOU
         WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS."

 10And,
         "(Z)YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH,
         AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS;
    11(AA)THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN;
         (AB)AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT,
    12(AC)AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP;
         LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED
         BUT YOU ARE (AD)THE SAME,
         AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END."

 13But to which of the angels has He ever said,
         "(AE)SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
         (AF)UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES
         A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET"?
