St. Timothy, Pastor

Collect (LSB)

Lord Jesus Christ, You have always given to Your Church on earth faithful shepherds such as Timothy to guide and feed Your flock. Make all pastors diligent to preach Your holy Word and administer Your means of grace, and grant Your people wisdom to follow in the way that leads to life eternal; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit , one God, now and forever.

Epistle: 1 Tim.6:11-16

The Good Confession

    11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, 15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Gospel: Matt. 24:42-47

42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour[a] your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant
    45 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? 46 Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47 Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods.

First Reading: Joel 3:1-21

God Judges the Nations

 1 “For behold, in those days and at that time,
      When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem,
       2 I will also gather all nations,
      And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
      And I will enter into judgment with them there
      On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
      Whom they have scattered among the nations;
      They have also divided up My land.
       3 They have cast lots for My people,
      Have given a boy as payment for a harlot,
      And sold a girl for wine, that they may drink.
       4 “ Indeed, what have you to do with Me,
      O Tyre and Sidon, and all the coasts of Philistia?
      Will you retaliate against Me?
      But if you retaliate against Me,
      Swiftly and speedily I will return your retaliation upon your own head;
       5 Because you have taken My silver and My gold,
      And have carried into your temples My prized possessions.
       6 Also the people of Judah and the people of Jerusalem
      You have sold to the Greeks,
      That you may remove them far from their borders.
       7 “ Behold, I will raise them
      Out of the place to which you have sold them,
      And will return your retaliation upon your own head.
       8 I will sell your sons and your daughters
      Into the hand of the people of Judah,
      And they will sell them to the Sabeans,[a]
      To a people far off;
      For the LORD has spoken.”
       9 Proclaim this among the nations:
      “ Prepare for war!
      Wake up the mighty men,
      Let all the men of war draw near,
      Let them come up.
       10 Beat your plowshares into swords
      And your pruning hooks into spears;
      Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’”
       11 Assemble and come, all you nations,
      And gather together all around.
      Cause Your mighty ones to go down there, O LORD.
       12 “ Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
      For there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
       13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.
      Come, go down;
      For the winepress is full,
      The vats overflow—
      For their wickedness is great.”
       14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
      For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
       15 The sun and moon will grow dark,
      And the stars will diminish their brightness.
       16 The LORD also will roar from Zion,
      And utter His voice from Jerusalem;
      The heavens and earth will shake;
      But the LORD will be a shelter for His people,
      And the strength of the children of Israel.
       17 “ So you shall know that I am the LORD your God,
      Dwelling in Zion My holy mountain.
      Then Jerusalem shall be holy,
      And no aliens shall ever pass through her again.”

God Blesses His People

    18 And it will come to pass in that day
      That the mountains shall drip with new wine,
      The hills shall flow with milk,
      And all the brooks of Judah shall be flooded with water;
      A fountain shall flow from the house of the LORD
      And water the Valley of Acacias.
       19 “ Egypt shall be a desolation,
      And Edom a desolate wilderness,
      Because of violence against the people of Judah,
      For they have shed innocent blood in their land.
       20 But Judah shall abide forever,
      And Jerusalem from generation to generation.
       21 For I will acquit them of the guilt of bloodshed, whom I had not acquitted;
      For the LORD dwells in Zion.”

Second Reading: Rom. 12:14-13:14

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”[a] says the Lord. 20 Therefore

      “ If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
      If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
      For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”[b]

 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Submit to Government
 1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
Love Your Neighbor
    8 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,”[c] “You shall not covet,”[d] and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”[e] 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Put on Christ
    11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
