Saturday of Trinity 20

First Reading: Jer. 5:1-19

Jerusalem's Godlessness

    1"(A)Roam to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem,
         And look now and take note
         And seek in her open squares,
         If you can (B)find a man,
         (C)If there is one who does justice, who seeks truth,
         Then I will pardon her.
    2"And (D)although they say, 'As the LORD lives,'
         Surely they swear falsely."
    3O LORD, do not (E)Your eyes look for truth?
         You have (F)smitten them,
         But they did not weaken;
         You have consumed them,
         But they (G)refused to take correction
         They have (H)made their faces harder than rock;
         They have refused to repent.
    4Then I said, "They are only the poor,
         They are foolish;
         For they (I)do not know the way of the LORD
         Or the ordinance of their God.
    5"I will go to the great
         And will speak to them,
         For (J)they know the way of the LORD
         And the ordinance of their God "
         But they too, with one accord, have (K)broken the yoke
         And burst the bonds.
    6Therefore (L)a lion from the forest will slay them,
         A (M)wolf of the deserts will destroy them,
         A (N)leopard is watching their cities
         Everyone who goes out of them will be torn in pieces,
         Because their (O)transgressions are many,
         Their apostasies are numerous.
    7"Why should I pardon you?
         Your sons have forsaken Me
         And (P)sworn by those who are (Q)not gods
         When I had fed them to the full,
         They (R)committed adultery
         And trooped to the harlot's house.
    8"They were well-fed lusty horses,
         Each one neighing after his (S)neighbor's wife.
    9"Shall I not punish these people," declares the LORD,
         "And on a nation such as this
         (T)Shall I not avenge Myself?
    10"Go up through her vine rows and destroy,
         But do not execute a complete destruction;
         Strip away her branches,
         For they are not the LORD'S.
    11"For the (U)house of Israel and the house of Judah
         Have dealt very treacherously with Me," declares the LORD.
    12They have (V)lied about the LORD
         And said, "[a](W)Not He;
         Misfortune will (X)not come on us,
         And we (Y)will not see sword or famine.
    13"The (Z)prophets are as wind,
         And the word is not in them.
         Thus it will be done to them!"

Judgment Proclaimed

    14Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of hosts,
         "Because you have spoken this word,
         Behold, I am (AA)making My words in your mouth fire
         And this people wood, and it will consume them.
    15"Behold, I am (AB)bringing a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel," declares the LORD
         "It is an enduring nation,
         It is an ancient nation,
         A nation whose (AC)language you do not know,
         Nor can you understand what they say.
    16"Their (AD)quiver is like an (AE)open grave,
         All of them are mighty men.
    17"They will (AF)devour your harvest and your food;
         They will devour your sons and your daughters;
         They will devour your flocks and your herds;
         They will devour your (AG)vines and your fig trees;
         They will demolish with the sword your (AH)fortified cities in which you trust.

 18"Yet even in those days," declares the LORD, "I will not make you a complete destruction.

 19"It shall come about (AI)when they say, 'Why has the LORD our God done all these things to us?' then you shall say to them, 'As you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will (AJ)serve strangers in a land that is not yours.'

Second Reading: Matt. 22:23-46

Jesus Answers the Sadducees

 23(A)On that day some (B)Sadducees (who say (C)there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and questioned Him,

 24asking, "Teacher, Moses said, '(D)IF A MAN DIES HAVING NO CHILDREN, HIS BROTHER AS NEXT OF KIN SHALL MARRY HIS WIFE, AND RAISE UP CHILDREN FOR HIS BROTHER.'

 25"Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first married and died, and having no children left his wife to his brother;

 26so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh.

 27"Last of all, the woman died.

 28"In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her."

 29But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, (E)not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.

 30"For in the resurrection they neither (F)marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

 31"But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God:

 32'(G)I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."

 33When the crowds heard this, (H)they were astonished at His teaching.

 34(I)But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced (J)the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.

 35One of them, [a](K)a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him,

 36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"

 37And He said to him, " '(L)YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

 38"This is the great and foremost commandment.

 39"The second is like it, '(M)YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'

 40"(N)On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

 41(O)Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question:

 42"What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They said to Him, "(P)The son of David."

 43He said to them, "Then how does David (Q)in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying,
    44'(R)THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
         "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
         UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET"'?

 45"If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his son?"

 46(S)No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.
